Character Information

General
Canon Source: Doctor Who
Canon Format: The show with info from other canon sources, like the novelizations.
Character's Name: Martha Jones
Character's Age: 23 (According to the rest of the world 22. An entire year disappears.)
Conditional: If your character is 13 years of age or under, please clarify how they will be played. N/A

What form will your character's NV take? It's going to be her flip phone, which is fairly ordinary aside from having great reception anywhere in the universe. The phone will however have a few additions, along with the camera at the back, there will be an added at the top of the screen so if she sits it open it can be used as a camera for video or holo use. It also can no longer call home.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities:
Martha is currently interning at hospital, and basically only has her exams left before she can be considered a doctor. She's quick to think, learns on the fly, and has built up a pretty impressive list of survival skills. Though she's able to use a gun, tries her hardest not to get into a situation where she'd need one.

Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? Martha, having no abilities, will be given the ability to project a field of emotion, like a reverse sense of empathy.

If she was to choose to project calm, then the person would feel a sense of calm wash over them and stay in place like a blanket. If she chose to project anxiety, the person would feel as though they were being emotionally prodded.

It would be highly effected by her own emotional state, if she was unable to think of how to be calm in a panic, the power could backfire and cause the person or people to panic as well.

It also would effect her by causing her to be effected by the emotional state she was trying to block. In cases of trying to block something like determination or happiness (not that she likely would) it wouldn't be too much of a problem. In a case of trying to block anxiety, panic, or grief, it would cause her to feel it as well. This would happen the more people she was trying to effect. One person, it might be completely ignorable. Were she to attempt it on a crowd, it might become crippling and cause the power to backfire. This only lasts about as long as it takes to stop using her ability, aside from the general 'if you panic it's hard to calm down' sort of thing.

In any case, a lot of focus could cause neither of these side effects to occur, and they'd both get more likely as she became tired or out of sorts. It would only work actually in the presence of the person or people she was trying to effect, and the closer she was to the person, the easier it would be. So, in short, if she had a hand on a person's shoulder it would be very easy, if she was across a large room or down a street it would take more concentration and would have a higher chance of backfiring or effecting her negatively. Also when starting to effect the person she'd have to be able to see them, though maintaining that wouldn't be necessary.

The field would be an active power for the most part, though might act as a passive one in a case where she was trying to calm others in a one on one situation, especially before she's aware of it.

Weapons: Martha will have the so call 'time lord killing' gun, with 3 of the 4 chemicals that are supposed to make it work.(Martha will likely try and destroy it as quickly as possible.) She carries a key that hides her existence just ever so much and makes her able to disappear into crowds. This is a perception filter, and it makes you unable to focus on a particular object. It doesn't work on the highly intelligent or people who are aware of the thing being disguised. Martha refers to it as knowing it's there, but not wanting to know it's there. (The wiki says it also doesn't work on people out of their time, but if this was true as of the Tenth Doctor then it would make the whole plot of the episodes where it's used not work. And since it's a rule from a 5th Doctor side story, I'm going to call it a non thing by that point.)

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History:
Have a Wiki Link. It is very timey-whimey

Point in Canon:During the year that never was, right after she and Tom leave the Professor to go to Bexley.

Character Personality: It is a well known fact in Doctor Who, that the Doctor only takes the best.

Martha Jones is no exception.

From the first moment she's seen, Martha is proven to be level headed, and a problem solver, she carries her family drama (the likes of which that would drive most people insane) and attempts to control it. When the entire building is transported to the moon, Martha is one of the first to actively try to figure out what's happening and catches the sight of the Doctor because of it. Martha is willing to do what she can to help, performing CPR on the Doctor even with dwindling oxygen, because the Doctor could help stop a machine set to kill.

All of this is only in her first appearance.

After she's brought along by the Doctor (Her first trip is only meant to be a 'Thank You' for saving his life, but one trip quickly becomes many.) jumps into things, trying quickly to assimilate the information she can, to help or to understand. Martha is very intelligent, able to pick up concepts quickly and because of it is nearly is dragged off to become a Dalek hybrid.

Though frequently put in horrifying situations, from a ship falling into a sun, to facing the Daleks, to facing the Master, and Martha always manages to be the person who is absolutely relentless in making sure things turn out. She wont leave someone behind unless there is absolutely no other option, but will make the call to do so if needed.

Martha is also wonderfully, terribly, in love with the Doctor at this point. She's done all she can for him, fought for him and lived for him, and he can't see her standing right there. It's depressing to her, and at some points a source of anger and irritation, though she still helps him and adores him, no matter what's asked. This said, shortly after this canonpoint, Martha decides to leave, feeling that her relationship with the Doctor is unhealthy and that she needs to go her own way, citing a friend that would drop everything every time a particular boy came round and how much she tried to tell the friend how toxic this was, and how she didn't want to be that.

She also has a devotion to her family that shines through when the Master begins going after them to get to her and, therefore, the Doctor. She tries to get them to a safe haven even though it isn't safe for her to use the phone line because of possible tracing, and does manage to warn her little brother and his family.

The biggest recent effect on Martha at this point, of course, is the year that is referred to in canon as 'The Year That Never Was", a year of the Master's rule, held in place by a paradox. During this year, Martha has to leave her family, Jack, and the Doctor in the hands of the Master so that she can save the world. Martha spends a year becoming a legend. She's the only woman to escape Japan. The woman who walks the earth. She saw ten percent of the planet die and still fights. She's treated as a savior, the only person people think can stop the Master. And she carries that weight as if born for it, leading and storytelling as she goes. All the time people think she's searching for a weapon, she even says that she is, producing a gun that she's supposedly collecting parts for.

This isn't true. It's a cover.

What Martha does, is she spends a year telling stories. A story. The story of the Doctor. She tells them that she loves him, and tells them that he can save everything. She spends a year pointing all of the minds of the planet towards one word, and spreading the tale of the Doctor like a virus under the Master's nose.

This isn't just some silly moral boost, this is actually the plan. Using huge psychic hookup the Master had been using for population control, she was directing all of that hope and love and awe actually at the Doctor, who could use it.

The plan works for the sole reason that Martha is determined enough to get the word across the world, into the minds of so many people it's practically unimaginable.

She's spent a year being the person people expect to have answers, and even when she admits she doesn't know something, she still manages a sense of authority. But this has come with a cost. As stated, Martha makes hard choices. And Martha has had to run, has had to leave people behind to face things she'd never wish on anyone because someone needs to save the world and she's the only person who can.

It's a lot to carry.

Character Plans: First and foremost, Martha has to get used to being safe again. Or relatively so. She doesn't need to spread a story, she doesn't need to work to stay alive, not in the same way she's had to. So Martha's going to try and resettle, she's going to volunteer at the hospital and try to get to take her exams let's be honest. She's likely to just say she's one already. Saves trouble and them telling her to go back to school all over again. She's not really going to be a company girl in any way, and likely will actively try and help figure out ways to get around them as needed. I also figure that she's going to get involved in helping other newcomers and newcomer relations with the city.

Writing Samples

First Person Sample

[She settles herself into the picture, looking something like someone setting up for a blog. Martha adjusts the camera, and sits back, readjusting her coat, before smiling.]

Hello.

Um. So. I hear I'm in Canada. I'm in Canada, and it's the future. Which is nice. Wasn't sure we had one, to be honest.

[Martha plays with a chain between her fingers, running it between them again and again but keeping whatever is connected in the palm of her hand.]

Everyone's been really helpful so far, but I need to get back. I heard there's no way, but there's no such thing as no way. I've seen some amazing things. Really amazing things. So there has to be a way.

If anyone could help me. I'd really- I'd appreciate it.

[There's a pause.]

Thank you.

[She sits there for a moment, as if thinking, before leaning forward and turning off the feed.]

Third Person Sample:

She'd always been decent at interviews, managing to keep her mouth shut for the most part when she wanted to say otherwise about whatever, or such and such.

So, when she'd gone in for a night shift job at hospital, she'd managed to keep her story straight. It was mostly true. Had she stayed home instead of wandering off into time and space with the Doctor, she'd have already finished her exams. And over the past year she'd had enough practical knowledge to last her a life time.

Though he gave her something of a once over, the man across the desk nodded and stood, so she did as well.

He told her how very nice it would be to have her, and how he hoped she wouldn't have any trouble with the other staff or the patients, seeing her situation. He almost immediately got to assuring her that he doubted there would be too much as the staff was 'open minded'. Newcomers were hired more frequently than people admitted. Things like that.

Well. Nice to have that out on the table, then.

Martha took a breath, set her jaw, and smiled back, shaking the man's hand with a firm grip. Like the situation or not, it wasn't about her. Not really. It was about being able to help, because people needed it. And she was very, very good at helping people, she could admit that if nothing else. People called her some kind of defender back home. So that's what she needed to live up to, even if she wasn't really the hero of the story, she needed to live up to all of it. She owed it to herself.

And that meant dealing with the anti-newcomer sort. She could do that. She'd had worse.

"When can I start?"
